The second Digital China Summit opened on May 6 in Fuzhou, the capital city of East China’s Fujian province. Guomai technology’s (GMTech) new creation, a vehicle IoT system dubbed “Most Intelligent ‘Brain’”, which uses domain architecture, made its debut at the exhibition of achievements of the summit. On May 7, Chen Guoying, chairman of Guomai Group, was invited to the Digital Fujian Sub-forum and delivered a keynote speech titled “Using Technology Innovations to Drive Growth”, sharing 20 years of experience in thinking and exploring of Guomai in technological innovation.
“Most Intelligent ‘Brain’” Making its First Public Appearance at the Summit
On May 6, a new energy vehicle with a car door sticker that read “Guomai’s IoV” drew people’s attention at the No.8 Digital Fujian Exhibition Hall at the summit. The car boasted eye-catching features such as distance control, voice interaction and driver assistance. These features are all part of Guomai’s new generation of smart operation system based on domain architecture. Many people at the summit believed that the “Most Intelligent ‘Brain’” was already self-driving because it showcased Guomai’s advanced and futuristic domain architecture.
The company exhibited, for the first time, a smart system that uses Vehicle to Everything (V2X) communication technology and domain architecture. The system was created through the joint effort of Flaircomm Microelectronics, Inc., a subsidiary of Guomai Group, and Fuzhou Institute of Technology (FIT), and was an endeavor to design a dreamlike lifestyle that truly connects cars with people for SAIC Motor Corporation Limited.It is also an upgrade on the previous smart system that used V2X, accelerating the enhancement from the “car router”—Telematics BOX to the “car computer”, which has laid a solid foundation for the upcoming core system that features automated driving.
Guomai’s Experience of Thinking and Exploring in Technological Innovation
On May 7, Chen Guoying was invited to the Digital Fujian Sub-forum and delivered a keynote speech titled “Using Technology Innovations to Drive Growth”, sharing 20 years’ experience of thinking and exploring of Guomai in innovating. He also commended the sound digital environment brought by the building of Digital Fujian. In his speech, he spoke on the knowledge Guomai has gained from innovation and its fast development from 3 perspectives.
1. Industry-education integration: From incidental innovations to sustainable innovation
In the past, technological innovations happened mostly by chance. However, by initiating the unique model of industry-education integration, Guomai has stimulated technology innovations and industry expansion through FIT, realizing its goal of transitioning from incidental innovations to sustainable innovations. The company has invented 3 methods for industry-education integration. The first is the encouragement within the company and FIT for entrepreneurship by gathering talent that fulfill all three roles of being lecturers, engineers, and technical shareholders, which will then enable the emergence of a group of small but unique start-ups. The second one is introducing cutting-edge technology and innovative companies into the campus; organically incorporating newest and industrial technology and people’s welfare into campus life. The third method is by collaborating with the government to transforms the campus into an open tech-park that integrates industry and education and promotes entrepreneurship, innovation and creation. Such a transformation is also an innovation that encourages technological innovation among the country’s universities.
2. Innovative elites should strive to maintain the innovative edge
If an innovative company wishes to stay ahead of its competitors, it has to maintain its competitiveness and preserve its market share. This is so what is referred to as the elite edge. Guomai encourages elites and elite groups in the field of mathematics, science or entrepreneurship to innovate. Guomai works hard to achieve a balance between fundamental research, applied research and innovation in new fields and business models while entering new markets. 10 years ago, through using the elite edge, Guomai incorporated information communications technology and automotive technology to launch a V2X company, Flaircomm Microelectronics. It has now become one of the leading companies providing V2X technology and is preparing to be listed on the Science and Technology Innovation Board of China. The firm has also been granted the European Union’s CE certification this year and is now allowed to export products to EU countries and is the first Chinese company that obtained EU’s E-Call certification.
3. Transition in applied researches: from fundamental Technological innovation to advanced Technological innovation
Currently, 84% of the research and development (R&D) investment in China is used to improve user experience and innovation efficiency. The money spent on basic and applied researched respectively accounts for 5.5% and 10.55% of the total investment. Guomai has changed the research-development ratio by increasing the number of applied researches, achieving advanced technological innovation. For instance, the company is now studying the integration of information technology and biotechnology to create a biobank for Chinese people. So far, it has built a genotype database of Chinese people by using the linkage disequilibrium of the genotype to build a Hidden Markov Model based on coalescent theory, and a database of regionally hard-to-treat disease through the correlation analysis of a massive amount of phenotype and genotype data. With two years’ hard work, the firm has solved many core problems of the Genome-wide association study, such as the stratification of people, the efficiency and the research cost.
At the end of his speech, Chen expressed that Guomai’s innovation and development is new proof that the rational spirit of science always cultivates innovation and creation in the digital soil. This is the greatest cultural spirit that came into being through 20 years’ exploring and researching for the building of Digital Fujian.
